Our emergency plumber service reaches Lockport from the south and southwest side of Romeoville. Both towns are in Will County, so the trip stays local. We answer 24/7, and a night call gets the same attention as a Monday morning one.
Very hard water from city wells
The City of Lockport draws its water from groundwater, using six shallow wells and one deep well. Its 2024 water quality report says the hardness ranges from 36 to 42 grains per gallon. That is very hard, and a Lockport heater is likely to scale faster, and a flush or a softener earns its keep.
What very hard water does to a water heater
Minerals settle on the bottom of the tank and coat heating elements. The heater runs louder, takes longer to recover and fails earlier. A yearly tank flush and a water softener slow that down. If your hot water has already gone cold at night, call the emergency line and we will check the elements and the tank.
Downtown Lockport and the canal-era houses
Downtown was platted in 1836, and Lockport became headquarters for the Illinois and Michigan Canal in 1838. The Gaylord Building dates to 1838, and the National Register historic district covers much of the downtown core. Buildings that old often hide cast iron drain stacks, galvanized supply lines and clay sewer pipes, based on general plumbing history.
Those materials corrode from the inside. A repair may uncover more work than the first leak suggested, so we describe what we find before adding anything. For a pipe that has failed completely, see our burst pipe repair page.
Lead and galvanized service lines
The city says lead did not come from its wells or mains but from service lines, plumbing and brass fixtures in some homes. It plans to replace all remaining lead and galvanized service lines by the end of 2026. Residents can check the city's service map and request a water service inspection.
Check that map before you pay for work on the line between the street and your house. If the city line is scheduled for replacement, you may want to coordinate with the crew. Call us if a service line leaks tonight and cannot wait.
Sump pumps and stormwater rules
Lockport's drainage page tells homeowners to discharge sump pumps at least 10 feet from the property line. It also says redirecting a sump pump into the sanitary sewer is prohibited, and a connection to the public storm sewer needs approval from the Building Department. The page adds that stormwater can take up to 72 hours to clear.
- Do not tie a sump pump to a floor drain or sewer cleanout.
- Test the pump by pouring in a bucket of water before storm season.
- Ask about a battery backup if your power fails in storms.
If the basement is already wet, a sewer line cleaning visit can rule out a blocked main.
Before we arrive, step by step
Kill the water
Turn off the main valve inside the house. If the valve is stuck, say so on the phone.
Cut power if water is near it
Switch off breakers only if you can reach the panel without stepping in water.
Note the hot or cold
Tell us whether the problem is on hot, cold or drain lines. It helps us load the truck.
Lift what you can
Get rugs, cardboard and stored clothing off the wet floor.
Lockport permits and water mains
City Building Services reviews plans, issues permits and schedules inspections, and its applications page lists plumbing and sewer or water repair forms. The city flushes its mains in spring and fall, which can stir sediment and discolor water for a day. Run a cold tap until it clears before blaming your own pipes.
Services we send to Lockport most often include hydro jetting for repeat clogs and water heater repair. Neighbors in Crest Hill and Joliet call the same crew.
