Lake Michigan water and what it means for scale

The Village of Plainfield has used treated Lake Michigan water since April 2004. Its three groundwater wells stay on standby for emergencies only. The village states a hardness of 6.3 grains per gallon, much lower than the very hard well water reported in nearby Lockport.

In practice, scale builds more slowly in water heaters and on faucet aerators than it does on well water. Some homeowners decide they do not need a softener. If you are shopping for one, test your tap first, then read our water softener page before you spend.

A growth boom means newer pipes, mostly

Population rose from about 4,500 in 1990 to roughly 45,000 in 2020, so most homes date from the 1990s onward. Those houses usually have plastic drains and copper or PEX supply lines. Problems there are often a failed fitting, a worn fill valve or a tired heater, rather than corroded steel.

Illinois EPA has said homes built before 1990 may still have a lead service line or lead-containing fixtures. The village says it is in the final stages of replacing lead lines and expects the remaining ones in its 2026 to 2027 budget year. If you live in an older section, ask the village what is on your street.

Downtown Plainfield and its older buildings

The Downtown Plainfield Historic District along Lockport Street was listed on the National Register in 2013. The buildings date from the mid-1800s to the mid-1900s, and fires between 1888 and 1899 destroyed many of the first wooden ones. Older masonry buildings and houses near Settlers' Park may still have galvanized or cast iron pipe.

Those pipes rust through slowly and then fail all at once. If a wall is wet and you cannot see why, leak detection finds the source before anyone opens the drywall.

Heavy rain and the DuPage River

The DuPage River runs through the village center, and the village treats wastewater at a 7.5 million gallon plant that discharges to the river. During the May 1, 2019 storm, roads including Renwick Road, County Line Road and 127th Street flooded. Tell dispatch which road you used, so we know whether a route is open.

What to do before the plumber gets there

Stop the flow

Close the main shutoff, usually by the meter or the water heater. Open one tap on the lowest floor to drain the line.

Know your ZIP

Plainfield uses 60544, 60585 and 60586. Say which one fits, because part of the village is in Kendall County.

Move valuables up

Raise electronics and papers onto shelves or tables before the water spreads.

Plan how we get in

Tell dispatch how we get in. A garage code or a neighbor works if you are away.

Codes, permits and licensed work

The village has adopted the 2014 State of Illinois Plumbing Code, with its own amendment. Building permits go through the village portal. State law requires anyone who installs or repairs plumbing to hold a license, and you can verify one through the Illinois Department of Public Health. We are licensed and insured, and we handle sewer line repair and water heater repair with that in mind.

Our crews also work next door in Bolingbrook and Joliet.
